RHYMES AND COFFEE
RHYMES AND COFFEE
© Lon Conklin 2025
Pen between my fingers and my thumb
Searching for a line that just won’t come
Words and music drifting out of sync
Oh I think my song needs a drink
But I threw away that old jug of blues
Waved goodbye to a weary muse
We had best a fifty-fifty chance
Now my mind is a never ending dance
It’s the right time for rhymes and coffee
Sunset, amber, red and gold
Nighttime is rolling in softly
With a melody these words come to me
Can never be too late to believe
I pour a cup and look out at the ocean
Going now where the winds are blowin’
Love is short, healing takes so long
Funny how a memory lingers on
It’s the right time for rhymes and coffee
Sunset, amber, red and gold
Nighttime is rolling in softly
With a melody these words come to me
Can never be too late to believe
I’m flameless candle in the dark
Close my eyes, pray for a spark
Inspiration is a priceless thing
I need to feel that fire again
It’s the right time for rhymes and coffee
Sunrise, amber, red and gold
Morning is waking up softly
With a melody these words come to me
Can never be too late to believe
It’s the right time for rhymes and coffee
Can never be too late to believe --- END ---

LOVE YOU STILL
LOVE YOU STILL
© Lon Conklin 2025
Some write of love and glory
Well I am living the story
Don’t know about tomorrow
Or what it holds for me
But I’ll love you still
Age is sending me signals
Another day another riddle
But every song sounds sweeter
On older fiddles
And I love you still
I vowed forever a long time ago
To build dreams together
Make memories of gold
You’re not just my sunshine
You’re the whole blue sky
And I always will love you still
I love you still
Father Time is a mean old thief
He robs us while we’re fast asleep
Today the future
Ain’t nothing like it used to be
But I love you still
Though autumn winds blow colder
The harvest moon looks golder
And every star shines brighter
When over your shoulder
I love you still
We vowed for always to have and to hold
Dream dreams together
Make memories of gold
You’re not just my sunshine
You’re the whole blue sky
And I always will love you still
Love you still
I love you still

LONG GOODBYE
LONG GOODBYE
© Lon Conklin 2024
Hello my love, you turn as I speak
And smile when I kiss your cheek
As twilight fills a deep blue sky
We’re fighting the long goodbye
I sing you a song that’s in your heart
But you don’t recall your part
Your ears still hear, your eyes still cry
We’re fighting the long goodbye
The thief of all your memories
Is stealing the alphabet
You just don’t remember
Good times I can’t forget
There’re joyful days when I almost see
The you you used to be
You rise and shine, your beautiful mind
Keeps fighting the long goodbye
Bewildered you say “Where have you been?”
For a moment you’re back home again
You stay for a while then leave me with a sigh
We’re fighting the long goodbye
No gift more lovely than flowers
The fragrance of youth so sweet
I bring a bouquet of red roses
And old stories of you and me
My heart’s so filled with love for you
And I know you still love me too
It’s the only memory that’ll never die
We’re fighting the long goodbye
Fighting the long goodbye --- END ---

FLY TO YOU
FLY TO YOU
© Lon Conklin and Chris DePalma 2022
When love goes wrong, the right words just don’t matter much
And since you left my heart is tender to the touch
It hurts to know that all we shared was not enough
Cuz my loving you shows no signs of letting up
And…
Chorus:
I would fly to you anyplace, anytime
If you need a friendly shoulder
You can always lean on mine
I would fly to you any day, anywhere
At the sound of your heart breaking (If your heart is ever breaking)
On broken wings I swear (There is someone who cares)
I would fly to you (And who would fly to you)
Fly to you
I shiver from the cold of sleeping with the past
From dreams of you that seem so real and fade too fast
I’d have given anything to make it last
And I won’t hesitate to try again if you should ask
And…
Repeat Chorus
Bridge:
I’m not taking back
A single I love you
And when you think of us
I hope you smile like I do
Repeat Chorus

THE RIGHT ONE
THE RIGHT ONE
© Lon Conklin 2025
By candlelight her hair was honey gold
Soft as lace upon my pillowcase
And gentle were the hands I loved to hold
Her laughter made my world a better place
But I walked away from love when I was young
Words I failed to say are still on my tongue
Fancy-free I didn’t see how lonely life can be
But now I know she was the right one
I remember our first kiss like yesterday
As sweet as rain on honeysuckle vines
And I still see her smile as she looked my way
In daydreams of green apple summertimes
I walked away from love when I was young
Words I failed to say are still on my tongue
Fancy-free I didn’t see how lonely life can be
But now I know she was the right one
I met her in the spring
Left her in the fall
When I was dreaming big
And thinking small
I walked away from love when I was young
Words I failed to say are still on my tongue
Don’t know why I was blind I left my heart behind
So long ago she was the right one
Now I know she was the right one --- END ---

LAY BACK EASY
LAY BACK EASY
© Lon Conklin 2025
Tonight it seems the world’s at peace
A lovely calm for times like these
Wise hoot owl in the cypress trees
Starry sky and a gentle evening breeze
Life knocks us down, lord I know
We get up and here comes another blow
Don’t it just leave ya feeling low
We let it hurt and then we let it go
Come…
Lay back easy
Put away your worries
Rest your mind your weary heart
You might just see a shooting star
Lay back easy
Drift away in pretty dreams
Lay back, lay back easy
Listen to the hum of the bayou
Sounds like a lullaby so blue
Out the window a heavenly view
The midnight moon is watching over you
Lay back easy
Put away your worries
Rest your mind your weary heart
You might just see a shooting star
Lay back easy
Drift away in pretty dreams
Lay back, lay back easy
The season’s turning honey
Here comes a breath of spring
With a sweet reminder
Of what sunny days can bring
And we will sing, so…
Lay back easy
Put away your worries
Rest your mind your weary heart
You might just see a shooting star
Lay back easy
Drift away in pretty dreams
Lay back, lay back easy
Yeah lay back, lay back easy --- END ---

FAREWELL OLE TROUBADOUR
Farewell Ole Troubadour
© Lon Conklin 2023
There’s a concert where stars are bright
For all the lovely angels tonight
Beyond the moon, over the blue
A stage door is open for you
Storyteller, the dreamer kind
I wondered once if you could read my mind
You made me cry, made me smile
And put away my blues for a while
Chorus:
Farewell ole troubadour
Go where so many have gone
You played your final encore
So leave on the wings of a song
Farewell ole troubadour
On Carefree Highway you slipped away
I saw you in the early morning rain
Alberta bound in ‘85
We were on the summer side of life
Maybe one day we’ll meet again
I’m hoping I know where but who knows when
And I will keep your songs alive
Great music will always survive
So…
Chorus:
Farewell ole troubadour
Go where so many have gone
You played your final encore
So leave on the wings of a song
Farewell ole troubadour
Leave on the wings of a song
Farewell ole troubadour

LONG WINTER'S NIGHT
LONG WINTER’S NIGHT
© Lon Conklin 2023
Storm hit in November, they called it thundersnow
I was driving on the Thruway outside of Buffalo
Snow blew off Lake Erie for several days or more
Five feet high and rising, worse than I have seen before
They had to move the Bills game, played it in Detroit
My car broke down on the 8 Mile, a road I should avoid
Thought I’d see Wyoming on the way to Malibu
Sure gets cold in Casper, it was -42
Chorus:
It’s been a long winter’s night
But now the sun is out and bright
Everything’s gonna be alright
I survived the shortest day
Then I drove the dark away
Now it’s gone like yesterday
It’s been a long winter’s night
Atmospheric rivers, flooding rain and snow
California shaking as I left the wet west coast
To the Mississippi Delta and through an EF4
An octave above thunder and I won’t forget the roar
Back home in the Catskills, back to the great northeast
In time for a nor’easter, trees tore down in the streets
Icy roads and power out crippling my hometown
I need a safe vacation where the sky is not falling down
Chorus:
It’s been a long winter’s night
But now the sun is out and bright
Everything’s gonna be alright
I survived the shortest day
Then I drove the dark away
Now it’s gone like yesterday
It’s been a long winter’s night
It’s been a long winter’s night

LOVIN FEELING
Lovin Feeling
© Lon Conklin 2023
Margarita with salt and ice
On the veranda chillin, it’s nice
You kiss me once and I kiss you twice
I got that lovin feeling
I like your laugh, your tenderness
The sound of my name upon your lips
And I say to myself how crazy is this
I got that lovin feeling
Chorus:
Have I told you why I feel alive
Cuz you know I do
You and me are falling hard
For me and you
And the only thing that’s changing
Is everything
Here it comes again that old lovin feeling
Here it comes that old lovin feeling
Tequila moon shining gold
Stars in the heavens, a sight to behold
And holding you could never get old
I got that lovin feeling
There’re people who say life’s better in twos
I have to agree since your pretty shoes (I have to agree since my pretty shoes)
Sit by the bed with my dusty old boots (Sit by the bed with your dusty old boots)
And I got that lovin feeling

UKULELE MELODY
Ukulele Melody
© Lon Conklin 2024
Doo do do doo do do doo do wee
Guitar makes me tap my toes but has too many strings
Banjo on my knee is cool but twangy when I sing
A ukulele ukulele melody
Do do doo do do doo do wee
Don’t need a radio or concert in the park
I’m my own big little band playing like a star
A ukulele ukulele melody
Do do doo do do doo do wee
Doo do do doo do do doo do wee
La la la dee come sing along
Everyone loves a ukulele song
Don’t mind a stormy day I think Hawaii
Sun and sand and in my hand a mini song machine
A ukulele ukulele melody
Do do doo do do doo do wee
Doo do do doo do do doo do wee
La la la dee come sing along
Everyone loves a ukulele song
Getcha feeling good brightens up your days
If all the world was playing one it’d be a better place

MY DOG'S BEST FRIEND
MY DOG’S BEST FRIEND
© Lon Conklin 2023
My good pal has a wet nose
Floppy ears and furry toes
He don’t mind that I'm flawed
If I need a hand I find a paw
When I do wrong he understands
I’m not like him, I’m just a man
I been my dog’s best friend
Since a way back when
He was just a pup
And became my bud
Knows my secrets well
Oh but he won’t tell
Best thing I ever been
Is my dog’s best friend
Thinks I’m a star, loves when I sing
Likes mandolins and joining in
He has a way to warm my heart
Without a word or trying hard
He wants to please, he’ll never fail
And it takes love to wag a tail
I been my dog’s best friend
Since a way back when
He was just a pup
And became my bud
Knows my secrets well
Oh but he won’t tell
Best thing I ever been
Is my dog’s best friend

PLAY JOHN PRINE
PLAY JOHN PRINE
© Lon Conklin 2021
Standing by the waters of peaceful Lake Marie
I saw an angel flying from Montgomery
Sitting on a rainbow, sky a glory blue
Sings of life and love and folks like me and you
There goes handsome Johnny, the Earl of Old Town
Joking bout the way this goofy world goes round
Talked dirty in Hawaiian, six string on his knee
Blue umbrella fella, he blew up his TV
Chorus:
He was halfway to heaven
Long before he died
With paradise waiting
On the other side
His souvenirs are treasures
Diamonds that shine
And they’re yours and mine
Play John Prine
Sang for God tonight with an illegal smile
Still crazy as a loon, they hung out a while
Sipping vodka cocktails, eating Gospel pie
Hello hallelujah in the sweet by and by
Repeat chorus
Tag:
His souvenirs are treasures
Diamonds that shine
For a good time play John Prine
For all the good times

BOY FROM ILLINOIS
BOY FROM ILLINOIS
© Lon Conklin 2021
I don’t play them because I’m happy but I’m happy when I do
He had me from the first song and I bet he had you
You can choose most any one, they’re all a masterpiece
From way down the Green River to the shores of Lake Marie
Chorus:
I love John Prine music
But Jesus loves it more
The good Lord's mighty high on
The truth and three chords
Angels cry here’s Johnny
Olde Town’s pride and joy
Oh that boy oh that boy from Illinois
Oh that boy oh that boy from Illinois
A million miles from heaven, I can almost hear the band
Fifty years of memories, the gold inside that man
I Remember Everything, A Good Time, Way Back Then
And That’s The Way The World Goes Round and Summer’s End
Repeat chorus
Instrumental
Final chorus:
I love John Prine music
And angels love it too
The good Lord’s mighty high on
Three chords and the truth
They all cry here comes Johnny
Olde Town’s pride and joy
Oh that boy oh that boy from Illinois
Oh that boy oh that boy from Illinois
Oh that boy that boy from Illinois --- END ---

ICE CREAM SONG
ICE CREAM
© Lon Conklin 2020
Love is just a scoop away
And I want it everyday
Dairy Queen, Dippin Dots
Cones with sprinkles on the tops
Rocky Road, Oreo
Chocolate chip, cookie dough
Vanilla bean with fudgy swirls
Good for boys good for girls
Chorus:
Ice cream ice cream
Heaven’s little treat for you and me
Woo-hoo woo-eee
Gonna get a big scoop-de-doo
Only thing better than one is two
Ice cream woo-eee
Ice cream mm mm
One pint two pints make a quart
I could eat it all and more
Sure would like a frosty float
A rock me oh banana boat
Hey what say we treat ourselves
Life is sweet a sundae helps
Many kinds I haven’t tried
Many times I can’t decide
Oh my…

SPOOKY HALLOWEEN
Spooky Halloween
© Lon Conklin 2019
Me and you, the boo crew, are going out tonight
Nothing beats a trick or treat on an eerie moonlit night
Everyone’s deserving of at least one frightful scare
So be afraid very afraid this time of year
Chorus:
There’s zombies, ghosts and goblins
Voices in the trees
Jack-o-lanterns gleaming
It’s like a horror dream
Witches laugh and whisper
Black cats will be seen
Make no bones about it
It’s a spooky Halloween
Spooky Halloween
I’m itchin for some witchin and a bite of something sweet
Vampires on the prowl be wary of their teeth
Graveyards shake, cauldrons bubble stirring up some fun
And ghouls galore at the door boo-yah everyone
Chorus:
There’s zombies, ghosts and goblins
Voices in the trees
Jack-o-lanterns gleaming
It’s like a horror dream
Witches laugh and whisper
Black cats will be seen
Make no bones about it
It’s a spooky Halloween
Spooky Halloween

WHERE IS SANTA CLAUS
WHERE IS SANTA CLAUS
© Lon Conklin 2024
I left a card for Santa from all the family
It says thank you for all you do and hung it on the tree
I know he’s is busy spreading light and joy
Leaving gifts around the world for every girl and boy
I really want a puppy, I've been good all year
Cuz I hear if I’m naughty I’ll just get underwear
So I’m on the lookout up in the evening sky
To see a jolly man in red and reindeer flying by
Where oh where is Santa Claus
No one wants to say
I lie awake and listen
But I don't hear his sleigh
Tick tock tick tock goes the clock
It's almost Christmas day
Where oh where is Santa Claus
Has he lost his way
Mom’s cookies on the table and milk from Borden's cow
And homemade gingerbread men, oh I can taste ‘em now
As I sit by the window, the street is white with snow
I still don't hear a jingle or his ho ho ho
Where oh where is Santa Claus
No one wants to say
I lie awake and listen
But I don't hear his sleigh
Tick tock tick tock goes the clock
It's almost Christmas day
Where oh where is Santa Claus
Has he lost his way
I'm getting sleepy
I pray he will come
So in the morning
There's gifts for everyone
Where oh where is Santa Claus
No one wants to say
I lie awake and listen
But I don't hear his sleigh
Tick tock tick tock goes the clock
It's almost Christmas day
Where oh where is Santa Claus
Has he lost his way
Where oh where is Santa Claus
It’s almost Christmas day --- END ---

LITTLE LOVE SONG
LITTLE LOVE SONG
© Lon Conklin 2025
What’s better than dancing to an old-fashioned waltz
The magic of moonlight or a star when it falls
A nice melody, an old Spanish guitar
Singing with you, the star of my heart
There’s nothing quite like a little love song
To show you I love you and have for so long
Honest and kind with sweet words that rhyme
A little love song in 3/4 time
What’s finer than sunshine on a picnic in May
Or a bouquet of roses on Valentine’s Day
A moment of wonder when you look at the sea
The smile on your face, that’s heaven to me
There’s nothing quite like a little love song
To show you I love you and have for so long
Honest and kind with sweet words that rhyme
A little love song in 3/4 time
Can’t shower you now
With flowers and diamonds
Fine things for all that you do
But all of my heart
I poured out in writing this song
Here’s my gift to you
There’s nothing quite like a little love song
To show you I love you and have for so long
Honest and kind with sweet words that rhyme
A little love song in 3/4 time
There’s nothing like a little love song --- END ---
