Backstory:
I took a trip down the Salmon River in Idaho with my family and we visited the homestead of Buckskin Bill- he was a character and a legend and I knew I had to write a song about him! This should be uptempo with LOTs of driving fiddle, banjo, mando and guitar. I just did a demo with guitar to give an idea of melody and mood, but this should be really energetic! Could be man or woman vocals.
Lyrics:
Buckskin Bill- Amy Clay
Verse
‘Bout 50 miles from nowhere
Where the frigid rapids churn
Deep in a canyon by The Sawtooth Range
On the River of No Return
For thirty solitary years
Sylvan Hart survived
In a brutal wilderness
He carved out a life and thrived
Chorus
The last American mountain man
Made no demands but his own free will
Tough as the leather on his back
And they called him Buckskin Bill
Break
Verse
Early miners panned the waters
‘Til the easy gold was gone
He salvaged what they left behind
To build his sturdy home
The state called him a squatter
His rifle disagreed
A loyal steward of the land
They finally let him be
Chorus
The last American mountain man
Made no demands but his own free will
Tough as the leather on his back
And they called him Buckskin Bill
Second Break
Tho’ Bill’s been gone for years now
The flame of his legend burns
Deep in a canyon by the Sawtooth Range
On the River of No Return
Chorus
The last American mountain man
Made no demands but his own free will
Tough as the leather on his back
And they called him Buckskin Bill
