Backstory:
To give you a perspective of how long this song has been in the works, I wrote the first version during my 2nd deployment in Vietnam in 1973. Fast forward to Sept. 2025, I decided it was time to finally finish it.
Lyrics:
I would gaze at those bonfires after games
Drift away on smoke genies in the flames
Barely more than a kid with an itch to roam
Never dreamed someday I’d miss comin’ home
The taste of life was honey on my tongue
Eighteen I couldn’t wait for twenty-one
When I left home dad said son pick up a phone
Let your mama know when you’re comin’ home
I’ve seen
California, to Portugal
Every highway and terminal
But I missed bullfrogs singin’ their song
And crickets as they sing along
I’ve been all around the world but the sweetest road I know
Is the one that I’m on comin’ home
Yeah I've seen
California to Portugal
Every highway and terminal
But I missed bullfrogs singin’ their song
And crickets as they sing along
I’ve been all around the world but the sweetest road I know
Is the one that ‘m on comin’ home
Greet every sun like it might be your last
Treat everyone how you want treated back
I guarantee that right before you go
The angels tell your mama you’re comin’ home
You may go around the world but the sweetest road you’ll know
Is the one that you’re on ‘comin home
