    Backstory:
We wanted to write a song about a mentor so we made him a grandpa and used the double meaning of the hook.

    Lyrics:

v Grandpa never broke a promise to this little boy once he went to seven stores to find my favorite toy every basketball game in that hot and humid gym five rows up behind the bench, you could count on him v I agreed to help him pull weeds from his garden but I went to play ball and forgot all about him he said when you make a deal and give someone your word our faith helps us know what a promise is worth chorus grandpa taught the ten commandments, lived the golden rule how to turn the other cheek when your neighbor's cruel John three sixteen and what it means, now I know for sure Grandpa helped me be, a man of his word v he taught me to apologize whenever I was wrong failing ain't failing if I get back up strong always tell the truth cause when you tell someone a lie it's never quite the same when you look them in the eye chorus grandpa taught the ten commandments, lived the golden rule how to turn the other cheek when your neighbor's cruel John three sixteen and what it means, now I know for sure Grandpa helped me be, a man of his word bridge when heaven called him home the funeral home overflowed they lined up to talk about the friend they'd all known when I hold Grandpa's Bible I know he's there with me Lord, thank you for the man who helped me see chorus grandpa taught the ten commandments, lived the golden rule how to turn the other cheek when your neighbor's cruel John three sixteen and what it means, now I know for sure Grandpa helped me be, a man of his word
