Backstory:
From the earliest time that I can remember ,I would hear my Dad playing his guitar, and singing this particular song. Having purchased a resonator guitar, made by Regal, in the 1930s, Dad began singing and playing at the beginning of Country Music’s, “Golden Age”. Jimmie Rodgers and Wilf Carter (Montana Slim), were at their prime then. Hank Snow was just starting out. That was the music that Dad would play, along with tunes by Gene Autry, and Eddy Arnold later on. As time went on, I began playing in a band myself. One evening in my early twenties, sitting around our old kitchen table talking to my Dad about different songs and singers, I told him that I really liked that song of Jimmie Rodgers that he sang all the time- “I’m Saying A Prayer For You Daddy”. He looked right at me then and said, “Dan, that’s not Jimmie’s song, that’s mine”. He had written it during the 2nd World War – my guess is sometime in 1944, the year that I was born. Given the state that the world is in today, the song's message is still timely and relevant.

Vs 1
I’m sayin’ a prayer for you Daddy
Wherever you happen to be
And asking the angels in heaven
To watch over you just for me,
For someday this war will be ended,
And you’ll come sailing too
Back home with the rest of the heroes
To the son who is waiting for you.
Bridge
I promised to be a brave soldier
That day when you sailed far away
And no one knows just how I miss you
May God please protect you I pray
Vs 2
I’m sayin’ a prayer for you Daddy
Wherever you happen to be
And asking the angels in heaven
To watch over you just for me
And now that the battle is over
Then you’ll come sailing too
Back home with the rest of the heroes
To the son who is waiting for you.
