Backstory:
This is an idea that I got in the middle of the night and I don't know why but i couldn't shake it even though i wasn't trying to write one. I am sure, it's an overdone idea....? I know there are plenty good dog songs. This is just from a visual I had at our own property that got to me. I would really like to dig into this one and appreciate thoughts, no matter what they are. I also wonder if adding names makes it too personal and not a general idea. The bridge may be too much. I also wondered if “This Field is for the Dogs” sounded any better or no difference. Apparently there’s a book called “Field of the Dogs…”I really appreciate and look forward to any feedback you have on this song! I hope your year is off to a great start!!

Lyrics:
Field of the Dogs
Field of the Dogs
on a small farm pasture
alive with sunflowers
tears have fallen down
like springtime showers
names handpainted on rocks
are added through time
and simple stick crosses
bound with fishing line
prechorus:
there’s a makeshift bench
of blackjack oak log
where a carved message reads
“Field of the Dogs."
chorus:
A dogs life spans
but a brief part
of our own
they’re here
then just like that
they’re gone
and another
joins the others
at rest
in the field of the dogs
verse:
sleek purebreds, mixed breeds
shabby, shiny, big, small
loyal companions
we adored them all
they were head rests
when we were tired
licked our faces
to dry sad eyes
prechorus:
patient playthings
for rowdy kids
fierce protectors
best of friends
chorus:
A dogs life spans
but a brief part
of our own
they’re here
then just like that
they’re gone
and another
joins the others
at rest
in the field of the dogs
bridge:
bella and astro
born to hunt
lovable big
klutzy bud
when we found bullet
he’d been left for dead
with a belly shot
full of lead
there was
clyde, cole
may and tank
Jeb and Bo
willie, hank
bandit, luke, sugar
molly, june, and frank
lots of love
in the memories
of that field
chorus:
A dogs life spans
but a brief part
of our own
they’re here
then just like that
they’re gone
and another
joins the others
at rest
in the field of the dogs
