Backstory:
This song was written on the evening of 911. As I watched TV there was a particular scene showing the Statue of Liberty in the foreground and the twin towers on the ground in the background. To me that image represented liberty, freedom vs tyranny/terrorism. It was so etched in my mind. I immediately wrote the song from the perspective of the Statue of Liberty.
Lyrics:
America Is Free
There is a statue
In New York Harbour
They call her Liberty
She takes in all
Your huddled masses
Yearning to breathe free
She stands so tall
Reaching to the sky
For all the world to see
And in her hand
The torch of freedom shines
Shines for you and me
Chorus
America, America
America is free
America, America
America is free
Lady Liberty, Lady Liberty
Always keep us free
Never leave a doubt
What you're all about
When you tell them
America is free
Bridge
Lady Liberty
With you head unbowed
Lady Liberty
We made it through and now
It's the time
We need to hear your voice
All across the Earth
Lady Liberty
Let the whole world know
Let the whole world know
Chorus
America, America
America is free
America, America
America is free
America,
America is free
America,
America is free
America,
America is free
America
America is free
