Backstory:
I wrote this song back in 2003. It's about the movement of jobs overseas by multi-national corporations for the sole purpose of profit. I didn't record the song until 2021 and in the 18 years nothing has changes other than it has gotten worse.
Lyrics:
We Don’t Make That Anymore
They shut ‘er down today
The suits never cared
Picked up my final pay
But I wasn’t near prepared
Now I’m standin’ in a line
Got no gentle on my mind
And I’m just a little scared
I don’t understand
Why we can’t build this land
Like we’ve always done before
There’s gonna come a time
Every one of us standin’ in a line
Or knocking on another door
Trying to find a job, yeah
Trying to find a job, yeah
There’s one damn thing that’s sure
We don’t make that anymore
Solo
I’m just a workin’ man
Tryin’ to give more than I take
But in some far off land
They’re paid a tenth of what I used to make
They load their ships each day
Everyone of them heading our way
Now don’t that take the cake
I don’t understand
Why we can’t build this land
Like we’ve always done before
There’s gonna come a time
Every one of us standin’ in a line
Or knocking on another door
Trying to find a job, yeah
Trying to find a job, yeah
There’s one damn thing that’s sure
We don’t make that anymore
