Backstory:
I wrote this song for our neighbor, Mr. Rubin Odom. He lost his wife Vonnie to alzheimers not long after we moved here. He is part of the greatest generation and their love story was timeless.
Lyrics:
A LONG GOODBYE
They were married in the spring time
May, 1939
They settled on his family’s farm
They hoped to own
Then the war came, took him away
In every letter she would always say
She was living for that day
When he came home
(chorus) When life brings us A LONG GOODBYE
There may be no good reason why
But of the lessons I have learned
There’s one that I live by
Love is stronger than A LONG GOODBYE
Now days he goes to the nursing home
So she won’t be there all alone
Even though she doesn’t know him anymore
He tells her ‘bout the life they had
And if she smiles, he doesn’t feel so sad
But he knows she is walking towards Heaven’s door
(chorus)
And he’s not a broken hearted man
‘Cause she’s helped him to understand
That one day love will let them meet again
(chorus)
Yes, love is stronger than A LONG GOODBYE
