Backstory:
I wrote this song with Bonnie Ryan and she came to the write with this story about her mom. I came up with the melody and music, Bonnie had much of the lyrics complete but I helped with those as well and this is the 3rd version of the song, which I think is now the final version. :) It is me singing the simple demo.
Lyrics:
Mama’s Patches
I smooth out all the wrinkles,
But I won’t tuck it in
Don’t wanna hide the colors
That show me where we’ve been
Mama made it from the t-shirts we bought on all our trips
To backroad shops, truck stops and small diners that we hit
Pre -
If you look at my quilt ... it's not my style
That don't matter none - it always makes me smile
‘cause ...
Chorus
She tended broken hearts, she mended up skinned knees
Ohh she stitched up more than things - yeah, her best work was on me
I see her in my mind and my breath catches
As I think of... Mama's Patches
She gave me scraps of wisdom,
Sewn up with all we shared
It’s kept me more than warm -
It’s proof how much she cared
Every night since then I've slept wrapped up in her love
I guess she knew that’s what I’d do when my life gets too rough
Pre
I think of all the hours she worked by hand
To make this favourite present from my past …where
Chorus:
She tended broken hearts, she mended up skinned knees
Ohh she stitched up more than things - yeah, her best work was on me
I see her in my mind and my breath catches
As I think of... Mama's Patches
Bridge:
Even when she’s gone, her spirit will live on
Through these tiny bits of fabric that I’m holdin’ in my palms
yeah
Chorus:
She tended broken hearts, she mended up skinned knees
Ohh she stitched up more than things - yeah, her best work was on me
I see her in my mind and my breath catches
As I think of, oh, as I think of, Oh as I think of... Mama's Patches
