    Backstory:
My dad died in 1993 after being in a cardio-induced coma for 5 days. I was lucky enough to be holding his hand when he took his last breath and the last words he heard before he went into eternity was me and my mom telling him how much we loved him. The next year, I wrote these words on the one-year anniversary of his death. It wan't until this year that I ever showed them to anyone. And then only after Chas and I had written over 15 songs together. For some reason, I just knew Chas would know what to play. And I was right.

    Lyrics:

VERSE 1: He sits in the bathroom till his legs fall asleep Reading the morning paper or some old magazine Doesn’t drink his coffee until it’s ‘bout cold Kisses mom and me then out the door he goes then out the door he goes FIRST CHORUS: He ain’t no king of commerce Or captain of a ship Doesn’t use fancy words Or dress to be hip He’ll never make a fortune See his name up in lights He’s just my dad And that makes it alright That makes it alright VERSE 2: He plays pitch and shoots hoops even when he’s tired Helps mom with the dishes puts me to bed each night Doesn’t watch much TV unless a ball game’s on Would rather snuggle up with mom when the mood turns them on when the mood turns them on SECOND CHORUS: He ain’t some would-be playboy Closing bars every night Doesn’t need the bottle When things don’t go just right He’s never beat my mama Or taken things out on me He’s just my dad And he’s proud to be And he’s proud to be BRIDGE: Someday he’ll stand beside me Here me say “I do” And the day he becomes grandpa He’ll think I’ve hung the moon I hope he knows I love him As much as he loves me He’s such a great man To my mom and me REPEAT SECOND CHORUS: He ain’t some would-be playboy Closing bars every night Doesn’t need the bottle When things don’t go just right He’s never beat my mama Or taken things out on me He’s just my dad And he’s proud to be And he’s proud to be
