Backstory:
This song was inspired by my mother-in-law who has been suffering from Alzheimer's for a couple of years. She died a couple of weeks before the song was demoed in March 2007. Her last weeks helped us to write the bridge. Two years later, my mom has been diagnosed with Alzheimer's.
Lyrics:
I would beg her please one more time
And she’d read Dr. Seuss again
When I was scared of fallin' down
I could always find her hand
She tried to answer every why
Gave me all the time it took
But now the shoe she tied for me
Is on the other foot
The tables turned
Life circled back around
The one who taught me how to walk
Is leaning on me now
She's slipping away
To someone I don't know anymore
But behind those distant eyes
Is the mom I loved/knew before
The tables turned
She asked again if dad was workin’ late
He passed away in ‘92
We find less and less to talk about
And more I need to help her do
Now the one who showed me love
Needs more love returned
She barely knows the child she raised
Here feeding her, yes
CHORUS
BRIDGE
It's hard to hope for another day
When each one takes her further away
FINAL CHORUS
Since the tables turned
And life circled back around
The one who taught me how to walk
Is leaning on me now
Slipping away to
Someone I don't know anymore
But behind those distant eyes
Is the mom I loved before
The tables turned
