Backstory:
The song is an expression of feeling regarding the ex-Cardinal McCarrick scandal. It is an attempt to consider the case from a merciful point of view--difficult as that is. It is based on Psalm 36 and Psalm 110.
Lyrics:
BITTER WATERS
VERSE
Sin stalks the sinner
Dep in his heart
His words sound smart.
No fear of God obstructs his sight;
He tells himself his ways are right.
VERSE
The worship words
He dares to say:
Jesus to the rescue=="ex porter"
His victims hide
In a closet of shame.
THEY're coming out now
To call his name.
CHORUS
He's gotta go down
To the Bitter Waters;
Drink his fill--be sanctified.
Jesus stands
In the Bitter Waters.
He washes clean on every side.
VERSE
Where is mercy
For such as he?
The same as offered
To you and me.
A wayside stream
For souls near dead;
Go drink your fill--
Raise up your head.
CHORUS II
You gotta go down
To the Bitter Waters;
Drink your fill;
Be sanctified.
Jesus stands
In the Bitter Waters.
He'll wash you clean
On every side.
