  1. We hope you will take an active part in our growing songwriting community. If you already know your way around, we hope you will greet our newcomers and help them feel at home. Our community is here for all of us, and we want it to be a thought provoking, helpful, safe, educational and easy to use site. The following community standards were developed in order to better serve you.
    SongU.com welcomes everyone...
    SongU.com serves a vast and varied community of songwriters with a diverse collection of ideas, educations, and backgrounds. SongU.com welcomes people of all races, religions, genders, national origins, sexual orientations, and points of view. However, if you are under thirteen, the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) went into effect in April 2000 and as a result, we are currently unable to allow minors under the age of thirteen to enroll at SongU.com.  For more information, please see our privacy policy. SongU.com will not tolerate expressions of bigotry or hatred, nor will we tolerate threats, harassment or abuse. The use of offensive language is prohibited.

    Enjoy our community...
    There is no such thing as a dumb question or posting. Feel free to share your thoughts, fears, ideas and advice. Whether you are wondering which performing rights organization to join, which multi-track software to buy or how to land a staff writing deal, there is a good chance someone else in our SongU.com community will have some insight to share with you. Supporting and helping one another is a big part of what our songwriting community is about.

    but don't do anything illegal or unethical...
    We reserve the right to remove, and, if appropriate, report any conversations or postings between users promoting, advocating, or explaining how to conduct illegal activities. SongU.com also reserves the right to delete any post and terminate any account (that is, ban a user) with or without notice, at any time and for any reason, including, without limitation, our judgment that you have violated our community standards. However, SongU.com is under no obligation to delete content that you find personally objectionable or offensive if it does not violate our community standards.

    ...or violate copyright law.
    As an educational songwriting community, SongU.com, will not tolerate the distribution of unauthorized copyrighted material (e.g. text, artwork, computer programs, songs, etc.) without the written consent of the original author.

    Don't be rude...
    Please do not engage in or encourage flaming or other harassment on SongU.com. The best thing you can do to help us get rid of rude or abusive users at SongU.com is to report inappropriate behavior to the appropriate channels using the help/support system found inside the member area. You can also submit a public side comment using the "Contact us" page. SongU.com will reserve the right to determine whether or not to remove or ban users based on their behavior at this site, and will remove those deemed inappropriate as quickly as possible. If you would like to see changes or have suggestions on how to improve our web site, please refrain from using our discussion boards as your forum. Instead, once again, use the help/support area internally or the contact us page externally.

    ...or spam people...
    It is perfectly okay to mention, link to, or discuss other web sites that are of interest to our users, as long as they do not violate our other guidelines. Unsolicited advertising is prohibited at SongU.com and we reserve the right to determine whether users, postings or conversations are in violation of our terms of service (TOS) regarding solicitation and advertising.

    ...or be a gherm (pronounced with a hard "g").
    Remember that the faculty and staff at SongU.com are contributing to the songwriting community by sharing their knowledge and experience. So, unless specifically directed, do not ask them to co-write with you, pitch a song for you, come to your gig or ask them to critique a lyric or song for you that is not part of an assignment or SongU.com service.

    Use common sense while you're here...
    Please bear in mind that what you read in our community areas are other users' opinions and stories. We trust you will find much that is helpful and informative, but please consult an entertainment attorney or other qualified industry professional before relying on any information you find here.
