    Backstory:
A 3-way co-write that started in NSAI's Song Camp 301 back in October 2002. This song took us 2 years to complete from scratch to several rewrites (after considering feedback and critiques). Sandie started the song with the title hook and a basic story outline, Sandy W. wrote the melody, and I found the pleasing harmonic accompaniment (chords) and tweaked the melody. With a la-la track, Sandie wrote the lyrics... all of us contributed to the rewrites of the lyric and musical arrangement. Recorded at Gator Hole with Dave Brooks on vocals.

    Lyrics:

"It If Hadn't Felt Like Rain" (S. Thurston/S. Williams/R. Clay) Distant thunder chased her 'cross the driveway, She rolled up his windows as lightning struck. In the flash she saw a corner of a letter Hidden ‘neath the floormat of his truck. Cold and steady rain beat on his windshield, Another woman's words beat on her heart If it hadn't felt like rain, if she hadn't heard the thunder She'd have never seen the danger of the dark cloud she was under. It’s not like she’d gone searching for the trouble that she'd found She'd be inside and dry, but living a lie, if it hadn't felt like rain. He said, "There's no excuse I can give you, I'm sorry and I know I was wrong. The truth is, I didn't think it mattered, We've been under storm clouds for so long I swear I hear the sound of distant thunder In every conversation that we had...." If it hadn't felt like rain, if he hadn't heard the thunder, He'd have never felt like drowning in the arms that pulled him under. He'd have never gone out searching for the trouble that he found, At the wrong time and place, in another’s embrace, if it hadn't felt like rain. Wind and rain can wash away delusions Honesty will ride out any storm. If it hadn't felt like rain, if they hadn't heard the thunder She'd have never left the safety of the illusions she lived under. He'd have never found his way home without the frightening flash of light, They would never have found, higher ground, if it hadn't felt like rain. © 2004 Thurston/Williams/Clay All Rights Reserved
