Backstory:
Tom wrote these verses as a poem for one of his poetry books. Over the past decade of our collaboration, I have modified several of his poems and created songs. I tweaked the lyric slightly with some wonderful input from my NSAI workshop group during a peer review. I then recorded a home demo of the song and presented it to Tom. In his feedback, Tom expressed a little surprise that the song was a ballad. He told me that he had thought the song could be an uptempo tune for Dwight Yoakam. So, you might also consider hearing this with Dwight's voice with an uptempo beat.
Lyrics:
THE PAINT’S ALREADY DRY
(Bob Clay - Tom Adamson)
You say my love’s been good for you
But you can’t love me back
Telling me time will heal all aches
Soon my future won’t be so black.
To all your words of consolation
I haven’t bothered to reply
Don’t try to paint a pretty picture
The paint’s already dry.
You say someday I’ll find another
Who will love me in return
She’ll bring me blue skies every day
All the happiness I deserve
You wrapped it up in a pretty bow
But I’m not gonna buy
Don’t try to paint a pretty picture
The paint’s already dry.
Thanks for that encouraging speech
How it hurts you more than me
I went out on a limb for you
And you chopped down the tree.
This ain’t quite how I pictured it
My heart’s quicker than my eye
Don’t try to paint a pretty picture
The paint’s already dry.
