Verse 1  A couple came to the Temple poor
            A prophet met them at the door;
            Took their baby in his hands; 
            Said, "Now in peace I leave this land.
            "This boy is set for the rise and fall
            "Of many a man in Israel;  
            "and woman, you are marked for grief:   
            "Your very soul a sword shall pierce."
REFRAIN   And Mary did not understand the prophet's words,
              But she said again, "Behold the handmaid of the Lord."
Verse 2   He placed the child in her shaking arms;
            The baby's warmth soothed her alarm.
            She sheltered Him in her mantle blue
            And kept the words and feared them true.
            She thought, "He'll be a king, ruling over all.
           " His friends will rise; His foes will fall."
           She pondered yet those words so fierce:
           Your very soul a sword shall pierce.
