Ruby was the youngest the last one of thirteen
The first to pack her bags and get on out of Aberdeen
Didn’t care where she was headed just knew she didn’t wanna be
On the edge of Mississippi ……and the edge of poverty

She just took the first ride out of there
With the first someone who seemed to care

But that promise on one knee with a quarter carat dream
Turned to years of trying and then half of everything
And half of next to nothing barely was enough to set her free
That ring might find another finger – a second hand a second chance

She laid down her last forty dollars, climbed on and found a seat
She told herself it’s just ’til she could get back on her feet
That greyhound took her back to where she never thought she’d be
On the edge of Mississippi ……and the edge of poverty

Small towns leave you with nowhere to hide
She’s not the first to come home swallowing her pride
