About

Kenzie Leigh is a Scottish-born singer-songwriter based in Southern California, writing emotionally direct contemporary country, Americana and country-rock songs. Raised in Dundee, Scotland, she began writing music at fourteen and developed a storytelling style shaped by lived experience, vivid imagery and an instinct for memorable, emotionally resonant hooks.

Her catalogue ranges from intimate acoustic ballads and cinematic story songs to gritty, guitar-driven country rock. Whether writing about heartbreak, resilience, regret, home or starting over, Kenzie aims to create songs that feel honest, specific and deeply human.

A multi-instrumentalist, she plays guitar, piano, cello, harmonica and drums, with guitar remaining at the heart of her writing process. Her influences cross country, folk, classic rock, adult contemporary and heavier guitar-based music, giving her work a distinctive sound that balances vulnerability with strength.

Kenzie is currently developing and promoting her original catalogue for artist cuts, publishing opportunities, sync placement and independent release.

Prodigal Daughter

Plays: 0
Backstory
This was custom written for consideration by Natalie Grant after listening to her inspirations and her material. I felt her powerhouse voice would be perfect for the Chorus which is an homage to Keith Green's Prodigal Son.
Lyrics
Chorus
I have led myself astray
Like a lamb to the slaughter
But You paid for my sins
I'm a Prodigal Daughter
And I’m down on my knees
You won’t turn me away, but I know You oughta
Forgive me all my sins
Take me back, your Prodigal Daughter

Verse 1
You were right there
You were the strength.
But I wanted to run free - live free, be me

When I need forgiveness — You give it
By Your grace, I am washed clean
When I stray from Your path
You remind me what Calvary means

Chorus
I have led myself astray
Like a lamb to the slaughter
But You paid for my sins
Now I'm a Prodigal Daughter
And I’m down on my knees
You won’t turn me away - but I know You oughta
Forgive me all my sins
Take me back, your Prodigal Daughter

Verse 2
I traded your mercy
For promises made,
I followed the voices that called me away

When I need forgiveness — You give it
By Your grace, I am washed clean
When I stray from Your path
You remind me what Calvary means

Chorus
I have led myself astray
Like a lamb to the slaughter
But You paid for my sins
I'm a Prodigal Daughter
Now I’m down on my knees
You won’t turn me away, but I know You oughta
Forgive me all my sins
Take me back, your Prodigal Daughter

God Fearing Man

I wanted to write a country song about strength and faith.

That...that's basically it.

Lyrics
Verse 1
When I was broken you kept me from the storm
When I was lost you took my hand and led me home
When I got drunk as hell, you helped me into bed
But now you’re fighting for your life - and I know you’re afraid

Here’s the secret, it’s one that you don’t know
Not one second - have you ever been alone
Day by day you’ve watched me calm as any breeze
But tonight you’ll see a fire rage in me

Chorus
I will bring the wrath of God to the door of every man
Who ever tries to put your back against the wall
He didn’t break the mold with me, but He sure knocked off the glaze
And I am rough and raw and ready for them all
They're gonna have to go through me to get to you
And I will fight them with every ounce of strength I have
They better be fearless!
But they gotta fear more than me
Cos you know I fear the God, not the man

Verse 2
I know the look you get when the phone goes quiet
You start talking softer, cos you need to buy some time
There’s that stack of bills by the toaster on the counter
And the landlord’s note folded a few times

You keep that Bible in your hand like a bad habit
Cos if you let it go - you're sure you’re gonna lose
So sit right here - there's something I gotta do
You carried me before, now I’m gonna carry you

Yeah, they gotta be fearless!
And they better fear Him more than me
Cos you know I fear the God, not the man

This House

Plays: 2
Backstory
I was practicing double stop chords on guitar and though it would be cool to develop a descending C to G run but try to make it interesting. this went through the wringer a few times including one version where i was playing a very "Jolene" type fingerpicked chorus. Eventually - I settled on the plucked chord version you hear.

It was heavily influenced by the loss of a couple of pets in February and June this year. The first time coming home to the house without them in it just hit me really hard - and i got to thinking about it in a more human context and how i would feel. Turns out - it's the same way I feel about losing Romeo and Cleopatra.

Verse 1
Your sweater still hangs on the back of my chair
My coffee's getting cold, I just sit and stare
That clock I hate stopped ticking for you
I’ll wind it when I know that I can face the truth

I don’t even watch for you through the window
I don’t even cry when I think about us.

Chorus
But every single room is just a piece of you
Fading photographs still tell the truth
Every empty doorway, where I stood and cried
But I know I can still survive
Learning how to breathe while my heart stands still
Every single tear fighting all of my will
Hearts don't break, they just learn a different tune
“This house just isn’t the same without you”

Verse 2
Memories lost in the afternoon light
Slowly giving up without a fight
But I still catch myself reaching for your hand
Then I remember this was never my plan

In my head the songs we used to sing together
Are just melodies outliving what we had

Bridge
And though I miss the scent of your skin
I can’t afford to miss you again
It’s waking up to find that you’re not there
A broken heart that can’t come up for air

Chorus
But every single room is just a piece of you
Fading photographs still tell the truth
Every empty doorway, where I stood and cried
Love can leave but I can still survive

But every single room is just a piece of you
Fading photographs still tell the truth
Every empty doorway, where I stood and cried
But I know I can still survive

Learning how to breathe while my heart stands still
Every single tear fighting all of my will
Hearts don't break, they just learn a different tune
“This house just isn’t the same without you”

Outro
Your sweater still hangs on the back of my chair
My coffee's getting cold I just sit and stare

I Bet You Weep

Plays: 7
Backstory
I had just picked up my 1973 Guild 12 string from it's set up and sat down fiddling around. I cam up with a riff that I kinda liked. After a couple of days of playing - the line "I bet you break hearts wherever you go" just popped out. I wanted to keep the chorus catchy and memorable - but i wanted a more free tempo approach the the verse lyrics.

the song is about that facade you put on when you are intensely vulnerable.

CHORUS
I bet you break hearts wherever you go
I bet you they throw themselves down at your feet and beg you for more
I bet you make promises, you’ll never keep
But I bet you when you’re all alone with your thoughts
You weep
Oh you weep

VERSE 1
Well I saw the truth in your eyes when you couldn’t find a safe place to go
I heard you screaming for someone to save you from all you have said
I wasn’t around for you then and I know they all took so much more from you than they’ve ever given
And you
Well you always just gave

CHORUS
I bet you break hearts wherever you go
I bet you they throw themselves down at your feet and beg you for more
I bet you make promises, you’ll never keep
But I bet you when you’re all alone with your thoughts
You weep
Oh you weep

VERSE 2
You laugh it off, like it’s nothing when they call you a whore
But you keep your jacket on inside the house so you can run for the door
All that talk about lovers you’ve had but you never let them see where it hurts
You wear it clean, you wear it quiet
‘Cos living it just makes it worse

CHORUS
I bet you break hearts wherever you go
I bet you they throw themselves down at your feet and beg you for more
I bet you make promises, you’ll never keep
But I bet you when you’re all alone with your thoughts
You weep
Oh you weep

I bet you break hearts wherever you go
I bet you they throw themselves down at your feet and beg you for more
I bet you make promises, you’ll never keep
But I bet you when you’re all alone with your thoughts
You weep
Oh you weep

Your Side of the Bed

Plays: 1
Backstory
A prime example of a "Happy Little Accident" - i was transcribing the song Nada One by Heart (from the Dog and Butterfly album - look it up! amazing song!!) and i begin tinkering around with the opening Am chord. From there the entire guitar piece fell into place. I recorded it on my cellphone and spent the better part of a week trying to put lyrics to it. The - by pure happenstance - I heard my roommate yelling at her cat to "get back on your side of the bed". Once I had the "I will sleep on your side of the bed" lyric - everything else just kinda formed around that. It's probably more folksy than country or pop - but it is definitely one of my favorites songs I have written!

VERSE 1
Just like that I stood and watched you leaving
And I am here just left to wonder why
Deep inside I know you finally tired of me
And it doesn't matter how much I have tried

And even though I used to wait and watch for you
I swear to God I still do not know why
There's nothing short of nothing here that I can ever do
So I fear this is my last goodbye

CHORUS
And though I know for sure you've gone forever
I tell myself one day I’ll be just fine
The tears will dry and someday I will be a different girl
Standing stronger on the other side
And though I know for certain you're the one who had the plan
To walk away and leave it all unsaid
There will come a time when I can finally see the light
And I will sleep on your side of the bed

VERSE 2
There were times I thought I’d die with laughter
And other times I thought I'd die from pain
There were nights I laid in bed and cried myself to sleep
I never want to have those nights again

And even though I kept it all inside my broken heart
I know you always knew how much it hurt
Living side by side but living in another lie
Breaking up without a single word

VERSE 3
Just like that I stood and watched you leaving
And suddenly this old world made some sense
Deep inside I know I finally tired of giving up
That part of me just climbed down from the fence

And even though I used to wait and watch for you
To this day I still do not know why
There's nothing short of nothing here that I can ever do
So I fear this is my last goodbye

FINAL CHORUS
And though I know for sure you've gone forever
Now I know for sure I’ll be just fine
The tears have finally dried and you're a memory that I find
Is slowly fading as I walk with Father Time
And though I know for certain you're the one who had the plan
To walk away and leave it all unsaid
It took a little time, but I can finally see the light
And now I sleep on your side of the bed

Making Scars

Plays: 0
Backstory
Like most of my songs - the genesis is typically a word or phrase. This one was "Making Scars" - i loved the idea of a big, cinematic production with a slightly 80s Dianne Warren kind of feel built around the idea of a lover who is sabotaging the relationship - and "Making Scars" - told from the point of view of their partner who has had to watch the decline and eventually has to step back and watch it all go to hell as her life passes by.

VERSE 1
You know you can't hide behind the moon
When you're reaching for the stars
Deep inside I know it's much too soon
You're too busy making scars

And every time I try to stand there in your way
All you do is push my love aside
I never wanted any of this anyway
All the secrets you would hide

CHORUS
So stand there, I don't care
You never needed me anyway
I'm just wasting your time
And if you should call,
I'll put my pride before the fall
I'm just killing time

VERSE 2
You can only watch me from a distance
And I watch you falling from afar
This was no sacrifice in no man’s land
This was just you making scars

And after everything I have done for you
Waiting for that one time you will try
And after all you've gone and put me through
You stand there and you can't even cry

CHORUS
So stand there, I don't care
You never needed me anyway
You're just wasting time
And when you fall,
I will not be there at all
There's no time

VERSE 3
But here I stand it's time to let you know
I'm a sinner just like you
All this time you couldn't ever show
What a tired heart means to the fool

If you need me, I will always be right here - you know it
Forever once more by your side
Call my name and I will find a way to answer you
But there no way back from where I have to hide

CHORUS
So stand there, I don't care
I only needed you to say
You're not wasting time
And if we should fall
How do you save us from it all?
If we're just…

So stand there, I don't care
I never needed you anyway
You're just wasting time
And when I fall
Can you just try and let me fall?
We're just killing time

Afraid to Let You Go

Plays: 2
Backstory
After a long period of self doubt with a partner who had clearly lost interest - I broke up with them several times - but I kept going back. I never understood why - it was like I was punishing myself and I could not figure out why I was hurting myself.

This song was born out of that pain. I broke up with them permanently shortly after writing this.

All guitar work by me, 1st Harmony vocal and strings (Nord 4) are me. Lead vocal, percussion, and additional vox harmonies are AI.

VERSE 1
I see you
Standing there alone
You don't think I know that something's wrong
I hear you
Whispering down that phone
You don't think I know what you have done

You don't even wonder why
All I do these days is cry
It's hard, but I can make it on my own

CHORUS
So why am I afraid to let you go?
Why am I afraid to let you go?

VERSE 2
You see me
Sitting there alone
My red dress and my best black stockings on
And my smile, it's the only one you know
Disappears as nighttime fades to dawn

And I don't even wonder why
You're not coming home tonight
It's hard, but I can't face the night alone

CHORUS
So why am I afraid to let you go?
Why am I afraid to let you go?

BRIDGE
Deep inside I know
Deep inside I know that you don't love me anymore
Deep inside I know you're gonna go

Mississippi

Plays: 3
Backstory
I literally pinged awake at 5:00 in the morning with the line "Woke up in Memphis, bought myself a ticket to LA" in my head. Raced to the living room (before feeding the animals!!) and wrote the full chorus changing it from "Woke up In Memphis" to "Woke up in Mississippi" because I wanted the line "But you know I always loved Tennessee".

It became about a journey - (yes I had to use a map to make sure the route made some kind of sense) and it all just came together :)

I play all the guitar (believe it or not - that electric guitar is an Ibanez Pia!!) and keyboards. I programmed in the pounding drums in the final course - Suno did the other instrumentation and replaced my voice with a much better one

CHORUS
Woke up in Mississippi
Bought myself a ticket to LA
Broke down in Memphis,
But you know I always loved Tennessee
Hitched a ride out from Kansas
To the Rockies on the Colorado line
Into the heat of Arizona
Just to see you one more time.

VERSE 1
There were times I knew,
I had the whole world figured out
But then you walked out of the summer heat
And you stood and stared me down

Maybe it's liquor talking
But I swear I 'm gonna take you home
Don't need to be with you tonight
But that’s better than being alone

PRE CHORUS
I just want you
I just want you

CHORUS
Woke up in Mississippi
Bought myself a ticket to LA
Broke down in Memphis,
But you know I always loved Tennessee
Hitched a ride out from Kansas
To the Rockies on the Colorado line
Into the heat of Arizona
Just to see you one more time.

VERSE 2
Spent a weekend in Vegas
Trying hard to leave your ghost behind
Burned through cash and conversation
Still couldn't get you off my mind

Every mile just keeps on proving
What I should've known all along
You can outrun a lot of things, girl
But what if this is where I belong?

CHORUS

Woke up in Mississippi
Bought myself a ticket to LA
Broke down in Memphis,
But you know I always loved Tennessee
Hitched a ride out from Kansas
To the Rockies on the Colorado line
Into the heat of Arizona
Just to see you one more time.

BRIDGE
Now every town looks different
But they all look the same at night
Neon signs and empty highways
Just drifting through another state line
I keep reaching for your memory
Like a cigarette after last call
If moving on was easy
Then why am I here at all?

PRE CHORUS
I just want you
I just want you

CHORUS
Woke up in Mississippi
Bought myself a ticket to LA
Broke down in Memphis,
But you know I always loved Tennessee
Hitched a ride out from Kansas
To the Rockies on the Colorado line
Into the heat of Arizona
Just to see you one more time.

Backstory
Genuinely just wanted to write a summer driving song with rock guitar and a full orchestra.

that's pretty much it - that and use the line:

"I like to think you hit Wisconsin
Hopped a train to Idyllwild
Settled for a husband
And you've taken on a child"

AI USE IN THIS SONG. This production is AI's cover version of my original acoustic guitar/vocal song recorded in my bedroom in 2011. As with all my songs - I perform all the guitar myself. I also sing all the songs - but I need AI to "cover" my voice to make it marketable. I wanted the busy string-quartet/orchestra for this song so get under the guitar part and elevate it away from "heavy metal" or "hard rock" - so i also used AI for that.

Verse 1
If I could take one moment with me
If I could pick my place in time
Wander down some secret path
A day before I die
I know I'd find that summertime in the recess of my mind
On the edge of nineteen sixty-nine

Verse 2
On a beach down in La Jolla
Where the surfers used to play
We packed our whiskey and our wine
Into my old man's Chevrolet
And you made me take the top down so you could feel that old sunshine
On the edge of nineteen sixty-nine

Chorus
And the sun beat down
In nineteen sixty-nine
You drank all my whiskey, girl
And I drank all your wine
And we talked over the radio
And every song they played was a reminder of how free we were
And of the love we made
As we stood there by the shoreline
You put your hand in mine
On the edge of nineteen sixty-nine

Verse 3
We were drunk on conversation
And we wiled the hours away
We made love to Nilsson
As the nighttime stole the day
And when you turned and you smiled at me it was the first time that you cried
On the edge of nineteen sixty-nine

Verse 4
And the waves they cleansed our bodies
Like some unforgiving God
I felt you breathing deeper
Your body searing hot
And you swore I'd held you closer than you'd been held all your life
Back on the edge of nineteen sixty-nine

Chorus
And the sun beat down
In nineteen sixty-nine
You drank all my whiskey girl
And I drank all your wine
And we talked over that radio
And every song that played was a reminder of how free we were
And of the love we made
So as we stood there by that shoreline
You put your hand in mine
Back on the edge of nineteen sixty-nine

Bridge
It just cannot be the last time
That I ever saw your face, but I
I've walked that beach a thousand times
Maybe it's true what they said,
You disappeared without a trace, but I
I like to think you're doing fine

Verse 5
I like to think you hit Wisconsin
Hopped a train to Idyllwild
Settled for a husband
And you've taken on a child
And in my heart I know you're there alone just watching that sun rise
Back on the edge of nineteen sixty-nine

Chorus
And the sun beat down
In nineteen sixty-nine
You drank all my whiskey girl
And I drank all your wine
And we talked over that radio
And every song that played was a reminder of how free we were
And of the love we made
So as we stood there by that shoreline
You put your hand in mine
Back on the edge of nineteen sixty-nine

Oh, if I meet you by that shoreline
Just one last time
On the edge of nineteen sixty-nine

VERSE 1
I'm not leaving
It's just not my way
There’s so many things
I still need to say.
I know that you love me
That much is true
but now's not the time
To explain this to you

CHORUS
So just let it rain
Just let it pour
Open the skies
It just makes me love you more
Just let the clouds
Cover the sun
Just let it rain
You're still the one.

VERSE 2
There was a moment
I felt alone
I had no strength
And you carried it all

Then came the struggle
Then came the storm
And you gave me shelter
Deep in your heart

CHORUS
So just let it rain
Just let it pour
Open the skies
It just makes me love you more
Just let the clouds
Cover the sun
Just let it rain
You're still the one.

BRIDGE
And when you feel
Like everything's fine
Look to the sky
And let that old sun shine
And when you feel
Like you're losing me again
I'll open the skies
Just let it rain

CHORUS
So just let it rain
Just let it pour
Open the skies
It just makes me love you more
Just let the clouds
Smother the sun
Just let it rain
You're still the one.

Just let it rain
Just let it rain
Just let it rain

I Think It's Time For You To go

Backstory
An ex cheated on me. This is kinda my revenge song.

Warning - EXPLICIT Lyrics.
Lyrics
Hey there baby it’s been a while since she told me about you
I mighta figured out that you’re bad news and here’s what I’m gonna do.
I don’t need to see you beggin'
You know we’re already done.
I know you’ve been running around on me, and I’m here to end the fun
So here it is in black and white, it’s not even up to you
Bet you think i’ll take you back – well that’s just not fucking true

Cos I could get myself a biker with no name
I could get a hot blonde for a change
I could do your best friend - you know damn sure she wants to.
I could get myself a cowgirl just for fun
What the hell i'll even do a nun
But it ain’t gonna be some dumb ass, no job, redneck, nasty, vain, shit kicker ho
I think it’s time for you to go.

Think about what you just gave up - I heard you got to “tap that ass”
You’re online making fun of me, then spending all my cash
I kicked your bitch ass to the curb
I should have done that years ago
Walmart's hiring and you’re dumb enough to welcome rednecks to the store

Bentonville Arkansas baby - ain’t far enough away…

I can get a dumb bitch with no brains
A 20 dollar whore and still get change
I could do your momma and you know that she wants to.
I could get it on with every one of your girls
Or anyone else in the whole damn world
But it ain’t gonna be a dumb ass, no job, redneck, nasty, vain, shit kicker ho
Think it’s time for you to go.

I swear you ain't even that hot
I swear you ain't ever been good enough
I swear you're so far beneath me bitch you oughta dig a grave

I could pay a single penny for your best thoughts
Fuck your best friend and not get caught
Oh!! And by the way - i did your sister too.
Get over you in 20 seconds flat while I'm still laying on my back
It ain’t gonna be you - dumb ass, no job, redneck, nasty, vain, shit kicking ho
Yeah it’s time for you to go
