Ask like that

Plays: 0
Backstory
Simply thought of the play on words and developed in a very 90s direction.
Lyrics
Verse 1

Forgot the past,
Forgot who I was.
Trying to forget who I am,
No destination left in mind.
Then you smiled across the room,
Like you already had a plan.
Never stood a chance
With a girl with an ask like that.

Pre-Chorus

I wasn’t looking for a reason,
Wasn’t trying to look back.
Then you leaned a little closer,
And everything changed like that.

Chorus

You just smiled and pulled up a seat,
Like it was nothing at all.
One simple moment, one quiet ask,
And I felt my defenses fall.
Too hard to resist an ask like that…

Verse 2

You ordered us another round,
Like you planned on staying late.
Talked like you already knew me,
So I stopped pretending too.
You smiled like it wasn’t effort,
Like it came easy to you.
And I caught myself thinking
Maybe I should too.

Bridge

I told myself I’d keep it simple,
Just one drink and I’d be gone.
Then you took my hand: “Come with me—
We can leave it all behind.”
Maybe it was the way you asked it,
Maybe the view from where I sat.
Either way, I didn’t stand a chance
With a girl with an ask like that.

Final chorus
You just smiled and pulled up a seat,
Like it was nothing at all.
One simple moment, one quiet ask,
And I let my defenses fall.

Too hard to resist an ask like that,
Girl, you still show up in my mind.
I don’t think I’ll ever forget
The girl with an ask like that.

Over getting over you

Plays: 0
Backstory
Saw a friend throwing himself a pity party, thought about my personal struggles and decided he should be over it.
Lyrics
[short instrumental intro]

[Verse 1]
Am I missing what the others see,
Or am I seeing what the others miss?
Everybody says that time will heal,
Like it's something on a list.
I'm over getting over you,
I ain't gonna fight it today.
I'll let the evening have its silence,
And the morning have its say.

[Chorus]
You can't outrun a memory
That still knows where you live.
Hearts don't break all at once,
They break, bit by bit.
If tomorrow changes everything,
Then tomorrow gets its way.
Tonight, I'm over getting over you,
And that's enough today.

[Verse 2]
The river keeps on moving,
Though every stone remembers rain.
I guess that's how a heart keeps beating,
Maybe it's just finding space.
Hearts don’t break all at once,
They wear down in time.
Guess I'm over getting over you,
But not over yesterday.

[Bridge]
If tomorrow feels a little lighter,
I'll be thankful when it comes.
Still, I catch your name in quiet places,
Like it never learned to leave.
I tell myself it doesn't matter,
But it still gets hard to breathe.
I'm over getting over you,
But only for today.

[Chorus]
You can't outrun a memory
That still knows where you live.
Hearts don't break all at once,
They break, bit by bit.
If tomorrow changes everything,
Then tomorrow gets its way.
I said, I'm over getting over you,
And that's enough today.

[short Outro]
I said, I'm over getting over you,
And that's enough today.

My Next Big Regret

Plays: 0
Backstory
Started as someone who makes questionable decisions. Made a fun song.
Lyrics
Verse 1
I could tell by the way she walked in,
She was looking for sin.
It took me one glance to know
Exactly how this thing would end.
She had that smile I’d never forget—
Dream or nightmare, hard to tell.
My next big headache crossed the room
Looking good as hell.
Pre-Chorus 1
Now, I’ve had quarrels
With girls with low morals,
But this one seemed to know
I would soon be hers
Before she said hello.
Chorus 1
She’s my next big regret,
My next best bad decision.
The kind I won’t resist.
Every warning sign was there—
I chose to look the other way.
She’ll be the most fun
I never want to have again.
I knew where this was going
The moment she walked in.
Yeah, I haven’t kissed her yet—
But she’s my next big regret.
Verse 2
She slid onto the stool beside me,
Said, “You look like trouble too.”
Ordered whiskey for the both of us
Like she already knew.
Then she gave me that wink
That made me think
She made questionable decisions—
Like choosing me.
Pre-Chorus 2
Now, I’ve had quarrels
With girls with low morals,
But one wink told me so—
I was already hers
Before she said, “Let’s go.”
Chorus 2
She’s my next big regret,
My next best bad decision.
And I know just where it leads.
Every warning sign was there—
I chose to look the other way.
She’ll be the most fun
I never want to have again.
I knew where this was going—
Now I’m going there with her.
Yeah, I’ve barely kissed her yet—
But she’s my next big regret.
Bridge
My mind calls it regret,
My body calls it neglect.
Some mistakes are worth making—
I’m hers for the taking.
She reached for my hand,
And I forgot my past.
Final Chorus
She’s my next big regret,
My next best bad decision.
And I’m past trying to resist.
Every warning sign was there—
I still looked the other way.
She’ll be the most fun
I never want to have again.
I knew where this was going,
But I followed her instead.
Yeah, I kissed her and I meant it—
She’s my next big regret.
Outro
She took my hand,
I forgot my past.
I knew I’d regret her—
Just not this fast.
My next big regret…
Might be my best one yet.

Glass Heart Anthem

Plays: 0
Backstory
Started with the idea of dropping out of denial and powering out.
Lyrics
[Verse 1]
You walked in like a verdict
With your hands in your pockets
Said I’d fold by midnight
Said I’d run out of options

I smiled like I meant it
Let you think you were winning
Kept my tears in the hallway
And my rage in the kitchen

[Pre-Chorus]
Oh, you don’t know this face
When it turns to steel
You can call it denial
I call it how I heal

[Chorus]
I’m fine, I’m fine, I’m fine
Watch me rise tonight
I don’t break, I bend
Then I come alive
I’m fine, I’m fine, I’m fine
With my head held high
You can shut that door
I can bless goodbye

[Verse 2]
I wore red to the funeral
Of the girl you kept shrinking
Left her name on the table
Left her doubt in the sink, yeah

Now I sleep with my truth out
Like a knife on the dresser
Every scar that you gave me
Built a harder river

[Pre-Chorus]
Oh, you don’t know this face
When it turns to steel
You can call it denial
I call it how I heal

[Chorus]
I’m fine, I’m fine, I’m fine
Watch me rise tonight
I don’t break, I bend
Then I come alive
I’m fine, I’m fine, I’m fine
With my head held high
You can shut that door
I can bless goodbye

[Bridge]
I was swallowed by silence
I was smaller than a prayer
But the woman in the wreckage
Started breathing in the air

So take your goodbye
Take your blame
I kept my fire
And I kept my name

[Final Chorus]
I’m fine, I’m fine, I’m fine
Watch me rise tonight
I don’t break, I bend
Then I come alive
I’m fine, I’m fine, I’m fine
And I mean it this time
You can shut that door
I’m already outside

I’m fine, I’m fine, I’m fine
Watch me rise tonight
I don’t break, I bend
Then I come alive
I’m fine, I’m fine, I’m fine
With my head held high
You can shut that door
I can bless goodbye

Consistent as Tennessee Weather

Plays: 0
Backstory
If you don’t like the weather just wait 5 minutes is a saying. Used to parallel my first wife.
Lyrics
Verse 1

Again today, no clue where I stand
The way she sees me changes by the hour
Her smile pulls me in, then quickly turns sour
She wants me gone, then pulls me where I belong

Pre-Chorus 1

Stacey calls for cloudy skies
With a chance of sunshine
But there ain’t a soul can tell me
What to expect from that girl of mine

Chorus 1

She goes zero to sixty in a blink
Then brings it back with a wink
She tears us apart, then pulls us together
She’s as consistent as Tennessee weather

Verse 2

The morning brought the cold in on the wind
I stayed quiet till the sun came out again
By afternoon, she was soft and warm
By evening came the thunder and the storm

Pre-Chorus 2

Stacey shows a storm across the ridge
Says it’ll clear by supper time
But there ain’t a soul can tell me
What to expect from that girl of mine

Chorus 2

She goes sixty to zero in a blink
Then brings it back with a wink
She tears us apart, then pulls us together
She’s as consistent as Tennessee weather

Bridge

Don’t need clear skies to know where I stand
Let the thunder roll—I’ll hold her hand
Won’t run for cover; let the hard rain pour
Each change in the weather makes me love her more

Final Chorus

She goes zero to sixty in a blink
Then brings it back with a wink
She tears us apart, then pulls us together
I love that girl—consistent as Tennessee weather

My Ghosts won't haunt me

Plays: 0
Lyrics
[Verse 1]
Granddad made the whiskey
Daddy wore the star
Mama kept the peace between
Both sides of the law
She gave me her courage
He gave me his grit
They taught me to stand tall
And never to quit

[Chorus]
My ghosts won’t haunt me
My road lies ahead
I won’t keep paying
Somebody else’s debt
I love where I come from
But I choose who I am
Their blood runs through me
My life’s in my hands

[Verse 2]
Half my kin wore badges
Half did county time
They shared a pew on Sunday
Like everything was fine
They were haunted by the history
Of our family tree
Lord knows I dearly love ’em
But that’s not the life for me

[Chorus]
My ghosts won’t haunt me
My road lies ahead
I won’t keep paying
Somebody else’s debt
I love where I come from
But I choose who I am
Their blood runs through me
My life’s in my hands

[Final Chorus]
My ghosts can’t haunt me
My road lies ahead
I won’t keep paying
Somebody else’s debt
I love where I come from
And I know who I am
Their blood runs through me
My life’s in my hands

My ghosts can’t haunt me
My life’s in my hands

My ghosts can’t haunt me
My life’s in my hands

My ghosts can’t haunt me
My life’s in my hands

My Kind of Tension

Plays: 0
Backstory
Had this as a hook for a while. Seemed to fit something I was feeling that day
Lyrics
Verse 1
You knew damn well I’d be here
You didn’t come for just one beer
That slow hello was fanning the flames
Don’t play innocent—I know your game

Pre-Chorus 1
We go stirring up the ashes
Feel it stirring in our hearts
Swear we ain’t looking for matches
But we both know how fires start

Chorus
That’s my kind of tension
Whiskey blurring my vision
You’re fire looking for friction
I’m gasoline with good intentions
One spark away from burning it down
That’s my kind of tension

Verse 2
You leaned close enough to breathe
The words that still weaken me
Your fingers slid down my arm
Like they’d never done me harm

Pre-Chorus 2
Now we’re stirring up the ashes
Feel it burning in our hearts
Both our pockets full of matches
We both know how fires start

Chorus
That’s my kind of tension
Whiskey blurring my vision
You’re fire looking for friction
I’m gasoline with good intentions
One spark away from burning it down
That’s my kind of tension

Bridge
Same old fire, same old ashes
Same goodbye we don’t believe
We’ll call tonight the last time
Till you’re standing next to me

Final Chorus
That’s my kind of tension
Whiskey blurring my vision
You’re fire looking for friction
I’m gasoline with good intentions
One spark away from burning it down
That’s my kind of tension

Yeah, that’s my kind of tension

Nobody Settles for a Georgia Girl

Plays: 0
Backstory
Grew up in Georgia, thought about my daughter and relationships.
Lyrics
Baby, it seems that “maybe”
Has become your favorite saying
Every time I ask about us
That’s the card you keep on playing
Maybe when the time is right
Maybe somewhere down the road
I kept turning all your maybes
Into reasons not to go——

[Pre-Chorus]

I thought I was being patient
Now I see what patience costs
If you’ve got to choose between us
Boy, you’ve already made your choice

[Chorus]

Nobody settles for a Georgia girl
She deserves to be somebody’s whole world
I gave you time to make up your mind
A maybe man ain’t worth a woman’s time
Call it stubborn, call it Southern pride
I won’t stand in line to stand by your side
If you’ve got to choose, I already know
Nobody settles for a Georgia girl

[Verse 2]

You called and said that maybe
The timing’s finally right
Funny, nothing changed at all
But this heart of mine
You found the words I waited for
Now I’m the only choice still here
And the girl who would’ve said yes
Left here some time ago——

[Pre-Chorus]

I thought I was being patient
Now I see what patience costs
If you’ve got to choose between us
Boy, you’ve already made your choice

[Chorus]

Nobody settles for a Georgia girl
She deserves to be somebody’s whole world
I gave you time to make up your mind
A maybe man ain’t worth a woman’s time
Call it stubborn, call it Southern pride
I won’t stand in line to stand by your side
If you’ve got to choose, I already know
Nobody settles for a Georgia girl

[Bridge]

My mama taught me patience
My daddy taught me pride
And neither one would call it love
If I’m waiting second in line

Nobody settles for a Georgia girl
She deserves to be somebody’s whole world
I gave you time to make up your mind
A maybe man ain’t worth a woman’s time
Call it stubborn, call it Southern pride
I won’t stand in line to stand by your side
If you’ve got to choose, I already know
Nobody settles for a Georgia girl

Art of Denial

Plays: 1
Backstory
Just about somebody standing tall, finally standing up, a little from my first marriage
Lyrics
Kept my head down,
Played my part.
Gave you control,
Piece by piece of my heart.

But something changed that day,
I finally saw the cost of living in your truth.

Today I stand tall, I'm finally using my voice
No longer bound by the choices of you.
It's the art of denial, an act of defiance,
No longer reliant on you

Now the spell's gone,
Now I see.
What you wanted,
Was never me.

But something changed that day,
I finally saw right through you.

Today I stand tall, I'm finally using my voice
No longer bound by the choices of you.
It's the art of denial, an act of defiance,
The end of my alliance with you.

You can keep your expectations,
Keep the power you once knew.
I've found my own direction,
And it leads away from you.

Today I stand tall, I'm finally using my voice,
Making my own decisions and seeing them through.
It's the art of denial, an act of defiance,
No longer reliant on you.
It's the art of denial, an act of defiance,
The end of my alliance with you.

Mountain to Move Me - Fast

Plays: 0
Backstory
Felt like a strong concept for a bluegrass song. A bit of a family protector strong male.
Lyrics
When I get a little closer
You go reaching for the door
You pick a fight with tomorrow
Like you’ve seen it all before
You’d rather send me walking
Than be the one I leave
But you can’t push me away
It’ll take a MOUNTAIN
to move ME

[Chorus]
The wind can shake the timber
The rain can flood the creek
You can swear I’ll leave tomorrow
But my roots run wide and deep
They can pull and you can push
But I’m where I mean to be
You can’t push me away
It’ll take a MOUNTAIN
to move ME

[Verse 2]
Your daddy calls me trouble
Your mama says I’ll run
Your brothers mean to drive me off
Before this year is done
Let every one come at me
You can stand behind me, dear
They can’t tear apart a love
That’s stronger than their fear

[Chorus]
The wind can shake the timber
The rain can flood the creek
You can swear I’ll leave tomorrow
But my roots run wide and deep
They can pull and you can push
But I’m where I mean to be
You can’t push me away
It’ll take a MOUNTAIN
to move ME

[Instrumental Break]

[Bridge]
Then you stepped out from behind me
Took my hand where they could see
And stood your ground beside me
Told me what I needed to believe

[Final Chorus]
The wind can shake the timber
The rain can flood the creek
No one’s leaving here tomorrow
Now our roots run wide and deep
They can pull, but we won’t move
We’re where we mean to be

[Outro]
It’ll take a mountain to move me
I ain’t going nowhere, you’ll see
It’ll take a mountain to move me
I ain’t going nowhere, you’ll see
No, I ain’t going nowhere
It’ll take a mountain to move me

You're sitting there beside her,
But you're nowhere to be found.
Your eyes stay fixed on the table,
While she talks above the sound.

Mary don’t you want to leave here?
You know she’s not right for you.

You keep waiting for tomorrow,
Tomorrow never comes too soon.

But my mind keeps doubling back
I’ve spent all day missing you
Tonight I’ll do something ’bout that

You left me here with your memory
I’m gonna leave here without it
I don’t know how much whiskey it’ll take

Your memory burns coming back
I’m putting one against the other

Tonight I’m gonna hit it

I’m hoping five’s the magic number
If not, six is next

When I Feel You - Duet

Plays: 0
Backstory
Thought of this on a road trip with my wife as I rubbed her back
Lyrics
[Verse 1]
Woke up already behind
Before my feet hit the floor
Phone won’t quit, coffee’s gone cold
Everybody needs more
My hand finds the small of your back
And the whole world settles down
One little touch reminds me
What all this running’s for

[Chorus 1]
Baby, I wish you could feel
The way I feel when I feel you
How everything that’s wrong with me
For a minute feels alright too
You make all the noise disappear
Like only you know how to do
Baby, I wish you could feel
The way I feel when I feel you

[Verse 2]
Kids are loud, the house is a wreck
Work keeps pulling, can’t catch my breath
Everybody needs something
And I’m running out of me
Then I pull you into my chest
Let the whole world disappear
All this small stuff can wait on us
I can let it go with you

[Chorus 2]
Baby, I wish you could feel
The way I feel when I feel you
How everything that’s weighing me down
Gets a little lighter with you
You make all the noise disappear
Like only you know how to do
Baby, I wish you could feel
The way I feel when I feel you

[Bridge]
Hand in hand, soul to soul
You’re the only place I ever feel whole
Your body against mine till we feel like one
When I’m holding you that close
There ain’t two of us anymore

[Final Chorus]
Baby, now I know you can feel
The way I feel when I feel you
How everything that’s weighing us down
For a minute feels alright too
We make all the noise disappear
Like only we know how to do
Baby, now I know you can feel
The way I feel when I feel you

Response to Jolene, tribute to Dolly
Lyrics
Verse 1

I hear you call the name Jolene
And I already know I've almost won
There's fear beneath the way you say it
Lord, I like it on your tongue

I know you'll always love him
Which makes this so much fun
He wasn't worth the taking
Till I saw it in your eyes

Pre-Chorus 1

You begged me not to take him
That's when I knew I would

Chorus

I can take your man
Any time I choose
I don't even want him
I just want you to lose
You were right about me
But wrong about why

Verse 2

I barely had to work at all
Just wore my hair down after five
Put a little fire in my eyes
Long enough to change his mind
He thought that he had made his move
As I led him to my door

Pre-Chorus 2

By the time he said my name
He wasn't yours anymore

Chorus

I can take your man
Any time I choose
I don't even want him
I just want you to lose
You were right about me
But wrong about why

Bridge

You can have him back now, honey
I was never gonna stay
He'll spend the rest of your forever
Wondering why I walked away
I got everything I wanted
And left you with a broken man

Final Chorus

I can take your man
Any time I choose
I don't even want him
I just want you to lose
You were right about me
But wrong about why

Thinking about my songwriting and my goals, and wanting to do something that outlives me.
Lyrics
Verse 1

The day is gone
The lights burn low
I hold my pen
But words won’t flow

I close my eyes
And drift away
I dream of things
I want to say

Pre-Chorus

There’s a restlessness inside
That needs to find its words
I wanna write a song
That no one else has heard

Chorus

Photographs fade, names disappear
Old voices vanish with the years
I don’t need to be remembered
I just want one song that is
Let my words find another voice
When mine can sing no more
A melody that outlives my memory
That’s all I’m writing for

Yeah, let’s sing a song that makes you come alive

Verse 2

Someday, somewhere
A stranger hears
A line I wrote
Across the years

They make it theirs
They change the key
And when they sing
They sing with me

Chorus

Photographs fade, names disappear
Old voices vanish with the years
I don’t need to be remembered
I just want one song that is
Let my words find another voice
When mine can sing no more
A melody that outlives my memory
That’s all I’m writing for

Yeah, let’s sing a song that makes you come alive

Bridge

Buildings crumble
A voice can fade
But a song can find a heart
A thousand miles away

Final Chorus

Photographs fade, names disappear
Old voices vanish with the years
I don’t need to be remembered
I just want one song that is
Let my words find another voice
When mine can sing no more
A melody that outlives my memory
That’s all I’m writing for

Yeah, let’s sing a song that makes you come alive

Every Goodbye Gets Easier

Idea I had from my writing across genres class. I like the hook and the drop off. Felt like a Jazz Standard
Lyrics
A1

The first time you left, the room forgot to breathe
The next time, I poured two drinks and watched you leave
Now I can face the silence
I’ve learned to bear the worst
Every goodbye gets easier
Every hello hurts worse

A2

I’m almost getting used to sleeping on my own
Your memory grows quieter the longer you are gone
Then suddenly, you’re standing there
And all my strength deserts
Every goodbye gets easier
Every hello hurts worse

B

Why does my heart still answer
Whenever you call my name?
Why does one touch convince me
This time won’t end the same?
I’ve learned every way to lose you
But love never learns

A3

So if you’ve only come to leave me once again
Don’t hold me like forever if forever’s just pretend
I can survive your leaving
It’s coming back that hurts
Every goodbye gets easier—
Every hello hurts worse

Inward reflection, sometimes leaning in on your darker thoughts
Lyrics
Verse 1

I know how to turn my silence

Into something sharp and cold

How to make somebody pay

For what I should’ve let go

Every wall I built for shelter

Gave the anger room to grow

Chorus

I’m still trying to figure out

Who I’m gonna be

But I’m starting to understand

The darker side of me

The part that finds its peace in pain

And loves what ought to leave

That’s the darker side of me

Verse 2

I watched her put on her coat

Never asked her not to go

Watched her taillights disappear

Then wished I’d asked her to stay

When the house went still around me

My darkness held my hand

Chorus

I’m still trying to figure out

Who I’m gonna be

But I’m starting to understand

The darker side of me

The part that finds its peace in pain

And loves what ought to leave

That’s the darker side of me

Bridge

Still don’t know which side will win

They both answer to my name

One is learning to let go

One still needs someone to blame

Final Chorus

I’m still trying to figure out

Who I’m gonna be

But I’m starting to understand The darker side of me The part that finds its peace in pain And loves what ought to leave That’s the darker side of me

One Touch Takes Us Back

Backstory
Memories of an old flame, imagining what it would be like to catch up later when more mature
Lyrics
Verse 1

You walked in wearing confidence
I never saw back then
I tried to play it unaffected
Till you leaned in
We talked around the history
Like it belonged to someone else
Then your hand brushed against mine
And the years just disappeared

Chorus

One touch takes us back
Your skin still knows my hands
Our bodies still remember
A rhythm only we understand
We can feel it like before
Without becoming who we were
If one touch can take us back
Maybe love can take us further

Verse 2

You move closer, nice and slow
No need to rush the night
Your hand finds the place it knows
Every nerve remembers why
The fire’s every bit as strong
But we don’t let it lead
We take our time with every kiss
And say what we both need

Chorus

One touch takes us back
Your skin still knows my hands
Our bodies still remember
A rhythm only we understand
We can feel it like before
Without becoming who we were
If one touch can take us back
Maybe love can take us further

Bridge

We both had to be right
Even when it did us wrong
I don’t need to win this time
I just wanna hold on

Final Chorus

One touch takes us back
Your skin still knows my hands
Our bodies still remember
A rhythm only we understand
We can feel it like before
Without becoming who we were
If one touch can take us back—
This time love can take us further

You know what lives beneath my silence
I know what simmers in your eyes
We can keep the room believing
Everything is going fine
But I see what you keep hidden
And you see the same in me

Chorus 1

The darker side of you
Looks good beside
The darker side of me
Like two shadows in the moonlight
Somewhere good folks shouldn’t be
We ain’t looking for redemption
We don’t need no sympathy
The darker side of you
Looks good beside
The darker side of me

Verse 2

You’re my dark passenger
Beside me on this midnight ride
Dashboard glow across your face
Nothing left to hide
Every mile away from daylight
Leaves another mask behind

Chorus 2

The darker side of you
Looks good beside
The darker side of me
Like two shadows on the highway
Running where the light can’t reach
We ain’t looking for redemption
We found somewhere to be free
The darker side of you

Far Side of Blue

Plays: 0
Backstory
Positive breakup song, remembering that I became a better man after a breakup. Wanting to take that to the next relationship
Lyrics
[Verse 1]

Coffee went cold on the porch rail

Your old blue mug still tells the tale

I found your note in a toolbox drawer

Three small words I don't read anymore

We were young with a borrowed car

Thought every mile meant we'd get far

Some roads end where the county line bends

Some hearts learn how to let go again

[Pre-Chorus]

I don't need to turn that key

I just need to know what it gave to me

[Chorus]

You taught me how to hold on without holding tight

How to tell the truth when it don't sound right

I lost your hand but I found my own

Built a little faith out of the breaking stone

If somebody meets me on the far side of blue

I'll know what to give because

I learned from you

[Verse 2]

There's a crack in the kitchen tile

I still step over it once in a while

Your picture's gone from the hallway frame

But the sunlight hits that square the same

I don't regret the years we spent

Or the last harsh words that neither one meant

You were a chapter I couldn't keep

But the best of it runs bone-deep

[Pre-Chorus]

I don't need to make you wrong

I just need to know what carried me along

[Chorus]

You taught me how to hold on without holding tight

How to tell the truth when it don't sound right

I lost your hand but I found my own

Built a little faith out of the breaking stone

If somebody meets me on the far side of blue

I'll know what to give because

I learned from you

[Bridge]

Some nights I still hear that old screen door

But I don't wait for your footsteps anymore

I bless the love,

I leave the blame

And walk into tomorrow with a steadier name

[Final Chorus]

You taught me how to hold on without holding tight

How to tell the truth when it don't sound right

I lost your hand but I found my own

Built a little faith out of the breaking stone

If somebody meets me on the far side of blue

I'll know what to give because

I learned from you

Yeah, I'll know what to give because

I learned from you

[Outro]

Coffee went cold, morning came through

I keep the lesson, I let go of you

Lyrics
[Verse 1]

You pulled up by the feed-store sign

Dust on the tires, a grin like mine

I had a list of reasons not to go

Then you tipped your hat, held open the door

[Pre-Chorus]

I've got a porch swing and a Sunday dress

And just enough nerve to say what comes next

[Chorus]

Give me a shot at something real

A little time to see how this feels

No big promises, no borrowed lines

Just leave your boots there next to mine

Coffee on the back steps, easy as it oughta be

Give me a shot at southern comfortable

[Verse 2]

We can take the long way past the county line

Turn the radio low, let the evening take its time

I know love ain't always polished up and new

Sometimes it's a porch light left on for you

[Pre-Chorus]

I've got a porch swing and a Sunday dress

And just enough nerve to say what comes next

[Chorus]

Give me a shot at something real

A little time to see how this feels

No big promises, no borrowed lines

Just leave your boots there next to mine

Coffee on the back steps, easy as it oughta be

Give me a shot at southern comfortable

[Bridge]

Dust on your shirt, sun sinking low

Pull me in close, let the whole day go

That front porch light looks good on you

Stay a little longer than you meant to

[Final Chorus]

Give me a shot at something real

A little time to see how this feels

No big promises, no borrowed lines

Just leave your boots there next to mine

Coffee on the back steps, easy as it oughta be

Give me a shot--you might never wanna leave

Give me a shot at southern comfortable

The Strength is in the Message

Plays: 0
Backstory
One of the things I wanted to do when I decided to really get into songwriting was social commentary. I wrote a song called Missed the Message. That song was a little preachy and judgmental, although I like. I had written a song idea entitled Strength is in the Message and finally decided to get around to it. I decided I wanted the same end message but wanted it to be more uplifting and could really do the same work and make people happy at the same time.
Lyrics
VERSE 1

There are days the road divides us
Every mile feels twice as long
But a little understanding
Can remind us we belong
We don't have to think alike
To find a way to carry on

CHORUS

There's a truth beneath the shouting

A quiet voice we've always known

Rising through our fear and doubting

Calling every heart back home

We can rise above the static

Listen for what still rings true

Change is never automatic

Still, love is coming through

The strength is in the message

VERSE 2

One small light can break the darkness
One clear voice can start a song
Every hand held out to someone
Says that no one stands alone
When we listen to each other
We remember we belong

CHORUS

There's a truth beneath the shouting

A quiet voice we've always known

Rising through our fear and doubting

Calling every heart back home

We can rise above the static

Listen for what still rings true

Change is never automatic

Still, love is coming through

The strength is in the message

BRIDGE

We don't need the perfect answer
Just the courage to begin
Every time we choose each other
That's the moment hope gets in

FINAL CHORUS

There's a truth beneath the shouting

A quiet voice we've always known

Rising through our fear and doubting

Calling every heart back home

We can rise above the static

Listen for what still rings true

Change is never automatic

Still, love is coming through

The strength is in the message

Love is coming through
The strength is in the message

Backstory
Had the hook ready for "I've been burned so many time, Now I'm a Bonfire", the decided it'd be more interesting if I made it a change from a negative to a positive during the song with the help of a woman.
Lyrics
[Verse 1]
Once again, I was a match they struck and threw away
They found their way home; I was still in flames
I spent my nights trying to put it out
Scared it would take what was left of me

[Pre-Chorus 1]
I got a heart that won’t be tamed
I tried to drown it, fed the flame

[Chorus]
I’ve been burned so many times
That I’m a bonfire
I’ve been burned so many times
Can’t put out this fire
Come too close, you might learn
I don’t break, I just burn
I’ve been burned so many times
That I’m a bonfire

[Verse 2]
You saw the hurt behind my grin
I held my breath when I let you in
You traced the marks I wished away
And loved the man those hard years made

[Pre-Chorus 2]
I got a heart that won’t be tamed
I made a match out of the pain

[Chorus]
I’ve been burned so many times
Now I’m a bonfire
I’ve been burned so many times
Can’t put out this fire
Come too close, you might learn
I don’t break, I just burn
I’ve been burned so many times
Now I’m a bonfire

[Bridge]
Let the smoke roll high
Let the dark run by
I was built from the scars
Now I light up the dark

[Final Chorus]
I’ve been burned so many times
Now I’m a bonfire
I’ve been burned so many times
Can’t put out this fire
Come too close, you might learn
I don’t break, I just burn
I’ve been burned so many times
Now I’m a bonfire

Backstory
Started as another song, but I realized I was telling too more stories. Essentially my daughter has a friend who has chosen another person who is taking them away from their planned life, effectively because of love and attraction.
Lyrics
Verse 1

Baby bro, I can’t tell you not to love her
She’s got her claws in too deep
But you gave up four years sober
That’s a price way too steep

Chorus
She’s taken pieces out of you
And it’s taken pieces out of me
Beauty knows just how to fool you
Till its thorns get underneath
And a wound don’t hurt no lesser
When the bloodline runs that deep

Verse 2
You sat across the table
But the real you never made it in

That thousand mile stare

Told me you weren't quite there

You weren't quite there

Chorus
She’s taken pieces out of you
And it’s taken pieces out of me
Beauty knows just how to fool you
Till its thorns get underneath
And a wound don’t hurt no lesser
When the bloodline runs that deep

Bridge
I can’t hope you back to sober
And she don’t love the person I do

Final Chorus
She’s taken pieces out of you
And it’s taken pieces out of me
Beauty knows just how to fool you
Till its thorns get underneath
And a wound don’t hurt no lesser
When the bloodline runs that deep

Found Heaven in the Backroads

Verse
Highway would've saved me half a day

But I turned where the blacktop falls away

Folks out here call it God's country

I thought that was just a thing they say

Chorus
I found heaven in the backroads
Not a gate or a street of gold
Just red clay and a slow sunset
More than these two eyes could hold
I kept looking for the turnoff
Thought it had to be further on
I found heaven in the backroads
I'd been driving through it all along

V2
Broke down by a cotton field, hood up in the heat
The last man I'd have figured was the one who stopped for me
Wouldn't take a dollar, just nodded up the road
Like the next one broke down's gonna be on me

Chorus
I found heaven in the backroads
Not a gate or a street of gold
Just red clay and a slow sunset
More than these two eyes could hold
I kept looking for the turnoff
Thought it had to be further on
I found heaven in the backroads
I'd been driving through it all along

Bridge
Rolled the window down and let the hurry out
Wildflowers in the ditch, not a worry or a doubt
There's something in the quiet out here
I don't have to understand

Half chorus
I kept looking for the turnoff
Thought it had to be further on
I found heaven in the backroads

This comes out of all the people I've ever worked with, you are one of them. Kind of an own of somebody who thinks they are special.
Lyrics
Verse 1
You come walkin' up slow like a man at a wake
Hat in your hand, lookin' ready to break
Got a speech that you practiced in the truck outside
'Bout the heart that you wrecked and the tears that I cried

Pre-Chorus
And I'm noddin' along, 'cause my mama raised me kind
But honey, I've been flippin' through the faces in my mind

Chorus
Of all the boys who ever bought me a round
Of all the tailgates in this whole damn town
Of all the slow dances and the 2 a.m.'s
Of all the people I've been with —
You are definitely one of them

Verse 2
Now don't look so wounded, I'm tryin', I swear
Were you the Camaro? Did you used to have more hair?
The lake house? The drummer? The one with the hound?
Now that dog I remember — is he still around?

Pre-Chorus
You swear I'll never forgive you — honey, here's the good news
I can't hold a grudge against I-don't-know-who

Chorus
Of all the boys who ever bought me a round
Of all the tailgates in this whole damn town
Of all the slow dances and the 2 a.m.'s
Of all the people I've been with —
You are definitely one of them

Bridge
If it helps, I can say that you tore me apart
I'll say I burned every picture, I'll say you left a scar
I'll hate you forever, I'll curse your name —
Just as soon as you tell me it again

Last Chorus
Of all the names I ever scratched off a list
Of all the bullets that I'm glad I missed
Of all the "never agains" and the "remember whens"
Of all the people I've been with —
You are definitely one of them

Backstory
A song about breaking girl code.
Lyrics
Verse 1
I know you used to be hers, and she’s my best friend
I know the rule says hands off, even when it ends
I know better, Lord, I’ve known it all along
But nobody told the band, and they’re playing this song

Lift
She’s down in Destin with a boy named Chad
Posting pictures like she don’t feel bad
And you’re standing here with your hand held out
And I know better, but I forget it now

Chorus
Hell, I’ve made worse decisions sober
Moved to Tulsa for a man named Grover
Cut my own bangs, bought a boat with no motor
So go on, pull me a little closer
She’ll be mad ‘til the weekend’s over
But I’ve made worse decisions sober

Verse 2
Now the fiddle’s slowing down and so are we
Closer than the two of us ought to be
Half this bar has got her number in their phone
Somebody’s filming, so by breakfast she’ll know

Lift 2
I’ll buy her brunch, I’ll take the blame
Swear I had a few and forgot your name
But right now your hand’s on the small of my back
And there ain’t no rule that covers that

Chorus
Hell, I’ve made worse decisions sober
Moved to Tulsa for a man named Grover
Cut my own bangs, bought a boat with no motor
So go on, pull me a little closer
She’ll be mad ‘til the weekend’s over
But I’ve made worse decisions sober

Bridge
I liked you first, back in the spring
Sober as a Sunday, didn’t say a thing
Just stood there smiling while she pulled you closer
Worst call I ever made, and I made it sober

Final Chorus
Hell, I’ve made worse decisions sober
Moved to Tulsa for a man named Grover
Cut my own bangs, bought a boat with no motor
So go on, pull me a little closer
She’ll be mad ‘til the weekend’s over
But I’ve made worse decisions sober
Yeah, I’ve made worse decisions sober

West Texas Christmas

Plays: 0
Backstory
I liked the West Texas X-mas flow, but went with Christmas. Thoughts of how much of the world has a different weather and concept of Christmas
Lyrics
Verse 1
Blue norther rolled in off the caprock,
Mesquite smoke hangin’ low and slow,
Farolitos glowin’ down the caliche,
Every one of ’em leadin’ you home

Chorus
It’s a West Texas Christmas,
Dust where the snow oughta be,
Not a whole lot wrapped beneath the tree,
Just a star hung low on the mesa
And you leanin’ into me,
That’s our kind of Christmas,
Our kind of Christmas

Verse 2
Pump jacks strung in colored lights,
Bowin’ slow across the land,
Barn light burnin’ past the cattle guard,
And your cold fingers in my hand

Chorus
It’s a West Texas Christmas,
Dust where the snow oughta be,
Not a whole lot wrapped beneath the tree,
Just a star hung low on the mesa
And you leanin’ into me,
That’s our kind of Christmas,
Our kind of Christmas

Bridge
They can keep their snowy postcards,
Every snow-globe Christmas scene,
I’ll take this desert, wide and open,
And the prettiest thing I’ve ever seen

Final Chorus
It’s a West Texas Christmas,
Dust where the snow oughta be,
Everything I ever wished for
Ain’t beneath no tree,
It’s under that star on the mesa,
Leanin’ into me,
That’s our kind of Christmas,
Our kind of Christmas
