    Backstory:
A couple of years ago, my doctor and I were talking about how out-of-line prescription drug prices had become. He knows I'm a songwriter and said I should write a song about it. It took over two years and a lot of failed attempts before coming up with this. It needed to be strong and make a statement without getting so angry that the message was lost. It's one of the most important songs I've written. If a country artist likes it and has the courage to record it, the song could wind up doing some real good. Even if it only starts a dialogue among people who could help to change things, it's a start!

    Lyrics:

Can’t Afford to Live ©2019 Steve Bryant Chorus: Can’t afford to live, but I’m afraid to die. My life’s in someone else’s hands, it’s easy to see why. So much profit in the treatment, no one gives the cure a try. Now I can’t afford to live, but I’m afraid to die. Verse: Sometimes I take half a pill, to save a little dough. Other times I don’t take a thing, might work out, you never know. Insurance keeps paying less and less, Medicare is even worse. Big Pharma rakes the profits in, anything to fill their purse. (Repeat Chorus) (Verse) So many good men and women, their prescriptions won’t be filled. They can’t pay what Big Pharma wants; they’re slowly being killed. Politicians promise everything but deliver grains of sand. Why nobody tries to help, I’ll never understand. (Repeat Chorus) (Bridge) There’s nothing wrong with profit, Unless it’s too damn much. Big Pharma and Insurance, Are so far out of touch. (Repeat Chorus)
