Backstory:
This song originated as a lesson on using a simile title for a lyric while I took the SongU course LYR 151 from Sara Light in Fall 2004. I am indebted to her for her exceptional teaching of this course and helping me better my ideas of lyric writing as a whole. I wrote the lyric with scratchy ideas for a new country melody in mind. Then, during the Spring Fling of SongU in April-May 2005, I was paired with Benn Cutarelli, another member of SongU. He is primarily a country writer. As part of the Spring Fling program, we were supposed to write a song together in a genre that we don't normally write, thus giving us the opportunity to come out of our comfort zones and explore other genres. Benn and I thought of writing a blues song together, which would be "different" and "unusual" for both of us. With Benn's help, this turned out to be a piano-based blues song with a jazzy feel to it.
Lyrics:
Your Love Is Just Like Gasoline
Verse 1:
Driving down the highway
Nothing’s going my way
Can’t believe it’s true
Someone so close seems so new
I can’t recall your face now
Seems like love has lost its pace now
Chorus:
Your love is just like gasoline
Keeps burning, burning away
Like memories
Keep fading, fading away
I’m only waiting for this journey to end
Trying to find my way back home again
Your love is just like gasoline
Verse 2:
Driving in the slow lane
Thinking with my whole brain
I find what a waste
Should have stopped with a haste
Seems like my head will explode
And that makes me sick to the core
Chorus: (same)
Bridge:
Once we thought we were meant for each other
Love sure will last forever
But look at us now
I don’t know how, but I’ll keep moving on
Chorus: (same)
